Invitation to Barbados

An invitation is being extended to seminarians from across the communion to spend a semester or a year at Codrington College. COVID-19 has made it impossible for some colleges to be opened to the usual day to day programming. Persons in training for ministry at seminaries which use the model of daily worship and community meals and other areas of engagement which are a vital part of ministerial formation will be disadvantaged by this closure.

Codrington College, the oldest college in the Caribbean, has used the monastic model for its entire existence. In the mid-1950s it was managed by the Mirfield Fathers and has continued the tradition to this day. Hence, for those trained here, community engagement is central. The government of Barbados has made it possible by a special visa offer to allow persons to live in Barbados for a year or part thereof.

Our invitation is intended to facilitate the much-required community component. It is also an important opportunity for another reason. The growing movement around Black Lives Matter creates a greater awareness of the importance of ministering in ethnically diverse communities. It would be beneficial for seminarians to experience Black communities in their native lands to better appreciate and understand the nature of such persons and their expectations of the Church.
